When you are running or operating your own business, you want all of your managers to have great leadership and management skills so that they can run the business more effectively. Not all of us are born with these talents but we can sure learn these with the help of leadership training programmes. Some of these programmes are more effective than others. This article discusses the various options available for developing great leadership skills.

Before commencing with a leadership training session, it is important to assess the current level of leadership your managers possess. You can arrange a meeting or circulate a memo to get feedback from your managers regarding the level of leadership that is present in the workplace and the specific improvements they would be interested in. This will be great for making comparisons months later, after the leadership training programmes have been implemented.

One way to improve leadership qualities of your managers is to provide them each with a good book on how to attain leadership qualities. This can be effective for some but not all employees. Some of them might not be able to grasp relevant information from the book while others might not even read the book at all!

Another option is to ask your employees to carry out their own research on the internet to find out more about improving leadership skills. There are perhaps millions of articles and other content available to guide them about developing leadership qualities. However, while some may gain from the tips and advice provided, others might not be very enthusiastic about taking time out to research and then finding what is appropriate, and implementing it. Also, all answers to their questions might not be present there, just as in the case of reading a book.

The final and the most effective option is hiring a professional business coach. Professional coaches make use of a number of business improvement techniques, such as team building exercises, management development, performance management and other areas. Taking part in such learning programmes, there is better chance of getting in information and practicing that at their workplace. Studies suggest people learn more from verbal and physical training as opposed to visual methods, like reading a book.

Because business coaches are highly experienced and trained in leadership skills and development, you can rest assured that they know the necessary tasks and information to provide your employees with in order for them to properly learn and put these skills into everyday life. Because the leadership programmes are taught in person, this provides your employees with the opportunity to ask the business coach questions about things they are not sure about – which can obviously not be done in person.

So, whether you are the owner of a factory, office or retail shop, invest in a good leadership skills programme to improve efficiency and work ethics at work. You will be amazed at the level of improvement in the productivity at the workplace!
