LED headlights - nights will never be the same - By: Louie Liu

LED headlights are now available for a wide range of cars. Though the LED technology has been around for decades, headlights has been a difficult application for them to master. The reason for that is simple. Headlights have to be very bright and be reliably so because they are a critical safety component at night. We are familiar of course with LEDs having seen small ones in electronic products for quite some time now. Even LED tail lights have been around for a while now. And when we see the bright ones used in today's headlights it is remarkable how much brighter these LEDs have become.

Of course you may be wondering why there should be so much of a problem making LEDs brighter. In the incandescent bulbs a longer and brighter filament is enough to make the bulb shine more brightly. In the case of LEDs though the problem is of heat dissipation. When you touch a bulb it is hot and when you touch an LED it is cold. So you may think LEDs and LED headlights do not generate heat. But they do. It is generated on the rear side where it can damage the internal components including the LED itself if it is not dissipated properly. And as the power of the LED goes up the amount of heat to be dissipated goes up. Heat dissipation by itself is not a problem since a car needs to do that in many other places. The engine needs to be cooled down with all the burning of the fuel happening inside it and the brakes also need to be cooled down since they get heated up absorbing all the kinetic energy. But the headlights of the car are not placed in a manner that is conducive to heat dissipation. This is because though incandescent bulbs got hot the heat was generated at the front and got dissipated to the outside from there.

But whenever a challenge presents itself human ingenuity rises to the occasion and LEDs have overcome the problem of heat dissipation. With greater acceptance one can expect the cost for bright LEDs will also come down. You can see the latest LED headlights at http://www.ilovebodykits.com.
