Internal Hemorrhoid Symptoms

• Painless

Internal hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that are located above the dentate line from embryonic endoderm. They are covered by a columnar epithelium of anal mucosa. The anal canal has visceral nerves, which only sense pressure, and somatic nerves that contain also the pain sensors. However, the visceral nerves are like intestinal nerves and do not have the capacity to feel pain, only pressure. Hence, internal hemorrhoids are painless since they are formed above the somatic nerves.

• Irritation

Internal hemorrhoid is pushed into the anal canal when it expands. This can cause a condition called prolapsed internal hemorrhoid, which looks like a soft mass and can cause pain, itching, and secretes mucus from dilated rectal skin. The mucus that is secreted can cause further irritation. When bulging of hemorrhoids is decreased, the hemorrhoid symptom also vanishes.

• Bright, red blood in the stool

This symptom is noticeable when you have internal hemorrhoids. This results from constipation that causes your stools to become hard and clumpy, thus, causing bleeding and pain.

External Hemorrhoid Symptoms

The appearance of lumps around the anus is a major symptom of external hemorrhoids. This type of piles has some different symptoms compared to internal hemorrhoids since it is located in the lower part of the anal canal.

• Blue or purple-colored lumps

This sign indicates that there is a blood clot formed under the skin within the hemorrhoid, which is termed as thrombosed external hemorrhoid. Somatic nerves, which are responsible for sensing the pain, are found on these areas. Therefore, this type of hemorrhoid can be extremely painful.

• Bleeding

Bleeding may take place with severe pain in the anus. This can result from frequent rubbing of the skin at the hemorrhoid location and straining of stools during bowel movements. However, if a patient experiences severe bleeding and pain, urgent treatment is necessary. It is because these can also be symptoms of more serious health problems like anal and colorectal cancer.
