Kiosk Design and Developing the Right Design of Kiosks for your Needs - By: S.Roberts

Kiosks can come in any shape and style imaginable, whatever kiosks design you would like, developers can manufacture a kiosk design to reflect your wishes, from a sleek contemporary kiosk to an extraverted, flamboyant kiosk design. The realms of design are only restrained by our own imaginations, and maybe a few engineering constraints - everything is possible.

In the design stages of a kiosk product, you will need to have a long, detailed meeting with your kiosk developers to discuss the kiosk designs that you have. The kiosk manufacturers will also bring lots of design ideas to the table from previous kiosk projects as well as other ideas that they have seen.
The kiosk developers have designed and produced many bespoke kiosks and they will be able to guide you through the basics of designing your kiosk.

You will first need to consider where the machine will be situated.
Is this out doors or indoors?
A kiosk for use outdoors will cost considerably more than one for indoor use.
Who will the kiosk users be?
What safety implications will be needed for your users?
Will the kiosks need to have disabled user access?
Will the kiosks be wall mounted, on a desk stand or be free standing?

What are the services the kiosk is providing?
Will the kiosk just be a touch screen kiosk?
Will the kiosk need to complete transactions?
Will the transaction be coinage or credit card or a combination?
Will the kiosk need to print out receipts, leaflets or other information sheets?
Will the kiosks need Internet access or will they run stand-alone?
Will the kiosk need a keyboard?
Will the kiosk need a telephone handset?

The design of the kiosk
How do you want the kiosk to look?
What colour pallet would you like the kiosk to be?
What colour pallet would you like the kiosk software to use?
What is your target user?
What style would you like the kiosk software to have?
Should the kiosk be multi-lingual?
What should the kiosk do when not in use?
Will the kiosk be running all the time or should it automatically switch on at the start of each day and off at the end of the day?

These are just some of the questions you might want to consider when you design a kiosk.

When the kiosk developers combined your ideas and needs; they will come back to you with a written kiosk design specification with illustrations for you to approve. Once approved, a prototype kiosk can then be made. The prototype may not always be made from the same materials as will be used in the production version though

If you have chosen an off-the-peg kiosk solution, you may still be able to have a bespoke design. Many kiosk designs sport a 'Facia' this behaves like a book sleeve that slips on the front of the kiosk. The design and shape of the facia can be designed to fit your kiosk; the only dictation is the screen. The kiosks face design must incorporate the size and positioning of the screen.

The benefit of a bespoke kiosk facia means that the kiosks can carry the company or organisations own branding.
