Kiev City - By: Robert II Smith

Kiev is the magnificent composition of rich antiquity, contemporary present and promising future. Kiev is not just the capital of Ukraine. It is the very heart of the country that is beating for more than 1.500 years already. The city has a long history of being the capital of Kievska Rus as well as serving as the stronghold of the whole Slavic culture. According to the legend, Kiev was founded by the three brothers Kyi, Schek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid that decided to raise a city on the steep bank of the Dnieper River and name it after their elder brother.

Occupying now the two banks of the Dnieper river modern Kiev stands as the huge administrative, social, religious, industrial, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Ukraine with the population of 3 million people.

Apart from the above-mentioned, Kiev is also an entertaining epicenter of the country. Year by year the city welcomes the openings of the top-notch night clubs, grand restaurants, cozy cafes, up-to-date cinemas and diverse shopping malls. Used to fixed soviet stereotypes foreign guests can’t help surprising when they see a charming modern European city.

Kiev of today is quite an eclectic city with old structures mixing up with high-rise buildings that are constantly continuing to rise. Kiev is also fairly considered one of the greenest cities in the world with parks and gardens occupying more than the half of the whole territory. Famous chestnuts of Kiev that blossom in spring (rarely in autumn) have become the symbol of the city. Locating on hills above the river Kiev has a multitude of splendid observation points that are popular visiting areas in any time of year. It’s a crime not to mention the greatest culture and art monuments in Kiev. For example, the Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev Pechersk Lavra are considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Everyone believes that Kiev is beautiful to its full in autumn or in spring when chestnuts blossom. As a matter of fact, it’s amazing all the year round. Summer brings to the city the sun and the smells of herbs, fruit and willows, autumn paints parks with golden gloss, winter dresses streets with a white coat and, finally, spring wakes up the city with new hopes, joys and aspirations.

Kiev is the city that inspires, that is impossible to remain indifferent to. You really should get to know more about Kiev as acquainting it means falling in love with it.
