The mental health nursing degree at the University of Southampton is a three year course, which allows graduates to register as practitioners in this field with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The BN mental health nursing degree is called the Bachelor of Nursing, or BN, and is a three year programme, which comes with a means tested bursary of £3,630 to cover living costs.

The educational level necessary for contemporary mental health nursing begins at graduate level due to the academic skills required for practice.

A mental health nursing degree is the right choice for those who have exceptional communication skills, absolute patience and who never judge behaviour, however unacceptable it may appear.

The programme is set out as 50% theory and 50% practice, to ensure appropriate learning and assessment in both areas. The skills and competencies for practice are continually assessed throughout all placements.

Guided by mentors, students experience an equal range of hospital and community settings to provide them with the skills required to pursue a career in either environment.

All practice experience on this mental health nursing degree will count towards the final grades achieved and is carefully designed to ensure competence and develop confidence.

Our new nursing degree programmes are leading the way in future training and were skilfully designed to prepare nurses to lead discovery through research based training, challenge practise and create change through innovation.

The curriculum was highly commended by the NMC on several counts particularly the ‘Southampton values-based model' in which intelligent compassion and sensitive care are at the heart of the programmes. Students will be expected to focus on their attitudes, beliefs, values and professionalism, from the outset, to ensure that patients/clients receive the high quality care they need.
