Kenya’s Tastiest Foods - By: Tony Maniscalco

While you’re in Kenya, walking across the country and spotting animals such as Africa’s famous ‘Big Five’, it’s not easy to forget about your rumbling stomach. Luckily, though Kenya isn’t quite as renowned for its food as its culture and wildlife, there are many delicious Kenyan dishes that will be a treat for any visitor to the country. There is no area of Kenyan life that reflects the country’s rich and diverse heritage more than the range of its cuisine.

Ugali and Nyama Choma

One of the most widely-found Kenyan Foods is ugali, a dish of maize flour cooked with water to a porridge or dough-like consistency, which is often eaten with beef, chicken and goat meat, or vegetable stew. The traditional method of eating ugali is to roll a lump into a small ball with the right hand, and then to dip it into a sauce or stew of vegetables or meat. In Kenya, walking can be energetic so is best done on a full stomach, and ugali can be very filling! Another widespread dish is nyama choma, roasted goat meat or beef, often eaten on weekends and holidays. One thing to bear in mind is that many meat dishes in Kenya are cooked without salt, so if salted meat is to your taste, be sure to say so.

Potatoes

In Kenya’s central province, one local specialty is Irish potatoes, and these are eaten in many forms. One favourite method is simply to boil the potatoes, and then mash them with green vegetables such as spinach, and then blend with other foodstuffs such as maize, beans, and green peas. Another common meal is githeri, where maize and beans are boiled together, then lightly pan-fried and spiced with stock cubes and seasoning. These make tasty and healthy treats after time spent in Kenya walking and hiking to see the sights, whether in a city or the countryside.

Rice

The coast’s main contribution to the menu in Kenya is a range of various tasty rice dishes. Wali, which is essentially rice boiled in coconut milk, is the local dish of the Mijikenda people. Pilau, where spiced rice is cooked with beef or mutton pieces is a delicacy in Mombasa, and a wonderful meal before heading out to explore Kenya. Walking can be tiring, especially for those unused to Kenya’s hot climate, and so a good meal can be just the thing to keep a traveller on their feet while enjoying all the delights the country has to offer.
