Keeping it Clean - By: Allan Michael Taylor

It is important to keep your window shades clean. More often than not, we become too lazy to clean up these window coverings. And this could lead to very unpleasant results.

Window shades are are helpful window covering that make us of a solid and flexible sheet to cover the window. The material would often be made of fabric. Fabric is the preferred material since it is the most flexible material possible.

Window shades would often use a roller to neatly keep the sheet in case you would want to pull it up. The roller is either made of metal or plastic. The rolling mechanism is protected by this metal or plastic outer case and would be operated with a string.
Unlike window blinds, roller shades are not operated by machine. This is the reason why it is the cheapest of all window coverings available in the market. They simply make use of muscle power to roll up or roll down the shade. Other window coverings sell at high prices due to the material of the slats or the shades or the way the window covering is operated. This also makes the roller shades a common choice among households.

As mentioned earlier, it would be best if we would keep our roller shades clean. This is so that we maintain the beauty and the ambiance of the home. Keeping the shades clean would also prolong the life of the shades. This would ensure that it would stay with us for long and serve us for longer as well.

Since most shades are made of fabric, it would be pretty easy to clean.
What you need to do first is to vacuum the shade. This is so that the dust particles that are stuck on the fabric are taken out.. This will also save you a lot of time and effort compared to washing the fabric. It is also possible that the fabric will get ruined if you wash it. Of course, we intend to maintain the condition of the shade. If you really think thank you need to wash the fabric, then check the shade's user manual. Make sure that you have the right water temperature and are using the right detergent.
If there are some stains on the fabric, you can clean them out with some detergent. Use just a mild detergent. You can also dilute the detergent a quarter cup to one cup of water. You need to make sure that you don't damage the fabric used for the shade. In that way, it would help lengthen the life of the shade as well.

You can also do something to make the fabric less prone to stains. You can take the shade off the roller then set it out on a flat surface. Then you can take a spray bottle and fill it with warm water. Add a teaspoon of ammonia to it. Spray on some of the mixture on the fabric. Make sure that you don't soak the fabric. Leave it to settle for 24 hours. The smell of ammonia will go away after a day. But this will help prevent the shade to get more stains.
