2010 looks set to go down in history as the year of pulling our belts in. The new coalition government has made a number of cuts and changes and so everybody can agree that the cuts in public spending taking place are very real. Of course, it makes sense to cut unnecessary expenditure whether you are balancing the books of your household or the country. There are many areas where savings can be found quite quickly. One area that should always welcome closer examination relates to purchasing.

If we’re talking about household expenditure, it can be as simple as changing your supermarket. In fact, the really well informed will go to different shops for different items. This can be a false economy if it involves additional petrol costs to travel to the various shops so can become a rather difficult balancing act.

However, when you are talking about a business or government department, it requires just as much effort to make sure you are paying no more than necessary for each item but you can generally get things delivered, thus making the comparisons easier and the cost effectiveness easier.

Another option is to buy the items that you do need in higher quantities to ensure that you will not be caught short and have to buy quickly at whatever price because you don’t have time to shop around.
