Keeping Your Family Safe and Entertained on Halloween - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Halloween is quickly approaching and kids everywhere are frantically choosing their costumes, planning their Halloween candy hoarding strategies, choosing fun games for parties, and counting the days until the horror filled fun and games begin. Halloween is not just a frightfest for children, however. Halloween can be a pretty nerve wracking event for parents, too. This is especially true of families with children of varying ages and interests. When there are multiple children involved, it can be frustrating and difficult to keep all members of the family happy, safe, and organised for the entire night of Halloween. Luckily, thanks to just a few simple strategies and techniques, along with some well thought out games for parties, this evening of horrors and fun party games has every chance of running smoothly for both parents and children.

To begin a safe and happy Halloween for your family, make your home into your family's Halloween home base. It should be your center of attraction for the entire evening. Of course this means that the candy collecting would be the sideshow and your fun party games will be the main event. This may seem like a major undertaking, especially with the young ones who do not seem to have anything other than Halloween candy on their minds. With a little structured activity, fun party games and incentives, however, it will be a breeze. This will ensure that your children will have a trick-or-treater and friend of their own age to partner and play fun party games with. It will also ensure that you have added adult supervision to help make sure that kids are always safe and observed, and that the home base remains interesting and fun.

To ensure that your home is entertaining, offer a wide selection of fun party games. Encourage your friends' children, along with their parents to consider your home as the place to be for the evening. Also encourage them to bring their own favourite games for parties. Games for parties are always a hit, as long as you choose your fun party games carefully and wisely. There are so many games for parties out there to choose from. Simply make sure to choose a wide selection of fun party games that represent the different ages and interests among your family and friends. Consider using kitchen timers to shorten the length of your fun party games. This is always a great strategy to keep games for parties fresh and lively. This is especially true considering that kids with short attention spans are a lot less likely to become bored, grumpy, and disruptive. Also a plus is that children who take interest in any of the fun party games while they are in progress will not be stuck observing when what they would like to be playing. After all, board games for parties are meant to be played, not observed! As added Halloween fun, replace the board games' playing pieces with candies. The child who is the furthest ahead when timers go off gets to keep all of the candy on the board.

Children should be free to come and go as their attention drifts between fun party games and Halloween trick or treating. Have children go out in groups of two to four with adults or older children volunteering to man each pair. Encourage structured trips and open an opportunity to scrutinize Halloween candy stashes by having a candy exchange every hour on the hour, or if that is too much for you, three times during the evening. All of the kids will try to be back at the house for this time so that they can trade off their black liquorice for the sour peaches. Parents can observe the candies without being too obtrusive.

Of course it is only possible to get trick or treating kids back to the house on time if they have a watch. This would be one of the safety items that a trick or treating duo would need. Also make sure kids have some type of reflective gear, tape, or device somewhere on their costumes, and are carrying a flash lights or perhaps glow sticks. Before the kids leave the house it is also a good idea to check to ensure their Halloween costumes are not longer than children to prevent tripping. Give all of the children a card with your address and phone number just in case of the unlikely event that someone gets separated. Make sure everyone in the group knows that they need to be back on the hour to exchange candy and to get back to participating in fun party games.

Upon the return of each trick or treating group, have each child donate a collected Halloween candy item to "the pot". At the end of the night at specific time, the winner of the pot will be announced. There are a couple of options available to you when it comes to choosing a winner. One option is to have a random draw. Another option is to have all of the children save their candy winnings from the fun party games. At the end of the night the best board games player, the one with the most candies, wins the pot. Yet another winning strategy is to offer the pot to the best Halloween costume or the guest who brought the biggest fun party games hit of the evening.

With these simple tricks, treats and fun party games of your own, you will be able to ensure that your family has a safe and fun Halloween that will safely be stored in the memory banks for years to come. In fact, next year your family will likely beg for a repeat. And don't be surprised if you end up pulling those fun party games out of the closet every Halloween that your family spends together.
