Keeping Your Event Safe - By: Arthor Greenwald

When organising any event, you are going to have to pay heed to certain safety restrictions. As an organiser you will have certain legal – as well as moral – responsibilities to keep those visiting your event safe. This involves many different steps from making initial risk assessments right through to ensuring that you have qualified and experienced event security on hand.

To some, hiring festival security for smaller music events may seem like a waste of money and a way of simply driving up overheads and in turn costs for those visiting. However, in reality, such security personnel could make a huge amount of difference to not only how smoothly your event runs but also to whether or not people ever want to visit another event you organise. In worst-case scenarios, neglecting the safety of those visiting your event could even lead to prosecution.

Whilst festival security might entail huge numbers of security personnel doing everything from checking bags through to patrolling the grounds, even much smaller events are likely to need someone on hand to keep an eye out for trouble. We’ve all been to smaller festivals where bag searches are not carried out effectively, or in some cases at all, with people able to walk in through the gates with whatever they like, or even without paying.

However, the importance of event security isn’t necessarily to stop people taking their own food and drinks into events, and this is in fact something that you may be happy to completely overlook. As a result, many people think it will be okay to hire friends or smaller local security companies who do not have the necessary skills to carry out essential tasks efficiently, but this can lead to not only you losing a great deal of money through ticket and food sales, but far more importantly that people could enter your event with weapons or simply cause trouble that no one there is equipped to deal with.
