Keeping Children Safe and Sound - By: John Vegan

A recent incident in the family made me recall the anxieties and fears surrounding the safety aspects of raising happy, healthy and well-adjusted children. My children are now at the stage where I can sleep through the night without the urge to constantly go and check that they are still breathing, although to be honest if I get up in the night to use the bathroom or to answer an untimely phone call, I will admit to going into their room and checking that they are comfortable. Whilst there, I will admit also to straightening arms and legs which are dangling on the floor, tweaking the duvets and, adjusting room temperatures and not forgetting to place a loving kiss upon their unsuspecting brows!

Child safety is a phrase which covers a multitude of topics, too great to go into now, so I will cover them a little at a time in other articles. For now I just wish to share a few safety tips with you, specifically safety for kids while out and about, whether it isrunning errands, visiting people or outings for the children- since let’s face it, these entertainments will make up the bulk of your social life from now on, added to later on by being the family chauffer, shuttling everybody to and from appointments, activities and play dates.

The first thing to remember is to always travel with the correct paraphernalia related to the age of the child, therefore a well packed baby bag for a new born is soon supplemented with snacks and entertainment for a toddler, which in turn leads to diversions like books and games and more substantial snacks for the pre-schoolers. Apart from this you always need to have a steady supply of tissues, wipes, suitable conversation pieces and a full first aid kit.

Make sure that the pram or stroller is suitable for the age of the child, with good brakes and a rain cover and also ensure that car seats and boosters are suitable and correctly fitted. If going to a crowded place ensure that toddlers are secured with a child wrist restraint and warn older children to stay within your sight and never to wander away, even a short distance, without adult supervision. We all tend to see the bogeyman around every corner but rather than scaring our children with tales of monsters who will eat them, we need to make them aware of the dangers, which they may come across, without making them afraid of their own shadow.

Keeping our children safe and raising them to become confident, balanced and wonderful human beings is a great responsibility and one of the hardest jobs in the world, but it also brings with it some of the sweetest moments and most rewarding sense of self-satisfaction, when you know that you have done a good job and feels even better when you are complimented upon having lovely kids, whether it is from strangers or in-laws!
