Keep your charger safe: unplug - By: Rick Dahne

Your grandmother quite possibly gave you a lecture on the safety of electrical appliances remaining plugged in; exclaiming about the fire dangers as she obsessively checked the points in her house. These days, most of us unplug our appliances to keep the electricity bills down and ease our environmental concerns. What you might not consider however is the effect not unplugging can have on your laptop adapters.

Laptop power cables are not quite as sensitive as some other parts of your laptop, but they do need to be looked after. They are vulnerable to being yanked about or having their internal wires snapped from rough handling. The main concern with laptop chargers when left plugged in is that they continue to consume electricity. They also generate heat, meaning that where they sit while they're plugged in is a real safety concern, particularly when they are attached to your laptop. Continuous plugging in can damage your laptop's battery, requiring a replacement before time. You can talk to us at Laptop Power about your battery concerns.

There is a small safety danger in leaving any electrical appliance plugged in and switched on unattended. There is a further danger when your laptop power supply is on and connected to your computer, particularly when the computer or charger is on a soft surface. These safety concerns are important, but of greater concern to the average laptop owner is the safety of their machine itself. For the safety of your machine and the longevity of your Laptop power cable and battery, it's best to unplug when you're not around.

Quite apart from the safety element of laptop chargers being plugged in, it's always a good idea to switch off and unplug electrical appliances that are not in use. Although this makes a very small contribution to your house's power-saving efforts, it is a contribution nonetheless.
