Kanban Simulations for Easy Implementation - By: Cristal Mcmeans

Most successful companies know that the key to success is to keep developing, and the best way to do this is to learn how to adapt quickly and to develop the continuous desire for learning. Furthermore, many companies today believe that the best practices to adapt are the Lean organizational practices. Furthermore, they also believe that the best way to implement these practices, including the Kanban method is through simulation training.

Simulation training, as compared to traditional teaching-learning practices such as lectures, handbooks and assessments, is more effective mainly because it requires participants to directly participate in activities, thus learning through practice and familiarity, therefore being able to retain and apply more after training.

Simulations are the risk-free versions of reality. It provides the participant with the courage and confidence to experiment and apply what he or she has learned, even with the risks of committing a mistake, without the actual fear and the results of the mistake. Simulations offer the right kind of practice for employees to understand concepts and processes further.

A Kanban simulation, for example, provides the actual context and actual issues of the workplace that requires the proper implementation of the Kanban. This allows the participant to make decisions that are directly related to how he or she should act in the actual workplace, with the confidence of learning from the possible mistakes without any risks involved. Through his or her own experience from the simulation, the participant further develops his or her understanding of the Kanban method.

Although real life mistakes that involve the Kanban method may put the entire workflow at risk, a Kanban simulation mistake would teach a participant what to do not to make that mistake on the actual floor. This sort of things makes learning not only more exciting but effortless to retain.

Last but not the least, simulation trainings, like in a Kanban simulation training where participants are divided into teams, encourage and develop teamwork among employees. The experiences teaches them to relate and to get involved in helpful discussions with their teammates when analyzing situations and making decisions to achieve better work results.
