Its often said that everyone lies once or twice on their CV, and nobody will - By: Ronald Kresten

It’s often said that everyone lies once or twice on their CV, and nobody will bother checking it anyway because employers don’t have the time. However, most of the people saying that are recent graduates or those who didn’t put a lot of time and effort into writing their own CV, not the people advertising a position.

Statistics show that a significant proportion of résumés do have one or more lies on them. They might be small, like a fudged date or neglecting to update a ‘Clean UK driving licence’ entry when some points appear on it after a speeding fine, or whoppers about where someone has worked and what they did there. Both types are a bad idea.

Omitting details won’t get you into trouble, so just remove the ‘clean’ part from the driver’s licence entry and there is no problem. Gaps in employment dates can be explained at interview and are certainly not necessarily a deal breaker when it comes to getting the right job, because there are a host of possible reasons for it, not just inability to find a job.

Background checks are becoming much more common, easier to obtain, cheaper and more thorough- although even if your employer doesn’t do pre employment screening, there is still every possibility that you, your referees, or someone you know will accidentally drop you in it and reveal the ‘tweaking’ in your CV before or after you’ve got the job, and if that happens you can kiss your chances goodbye.

A standard background check will make sure of your employment history by making the appropriate calls to previous employers and personal referees, and will also check the bigger points you’ve listed on your résumé. Academic and professional qualifications, driver’s licences and passports, criminal records, and even your financial and credit situation can be checked by a diligent online provider at very reasonable cost, so be aware that anything you put down on your CV is subject to scrutiny, even if prospective employers really don’t have time to do it themselves.
