Its All About Driving Comfort & Safety - By: Terry S Vostor

Although flat tires are nowhere near as common as they once were , everyone who drives a car or truck - even if they have a cell phone and motor league AAA or CAA available should know how to change tires. Trouble could easily arrive on the turnpike when no other motorists are around to help you on your way.

Tip: Register your new tires. The law once required all tire sellers to submit your name to the manufacturer , so the company could contact you if the tires were recalled. This is no longer required for independent tire dealers. Ask for the "tire registration" form or forms when you purchase your tires and remember to fill it out and promptly mail it or send by email. This is the only way that the tire company can get in touch with you if your tires are recalled. Alternatively you may receive offers and discounts as a matter of course. Improperly inflated tires are a major cause of premature tire failure. Check for proper inflation at least once a month. The most fuel efficient level is the maximum pressure listed on the side of the tire. Because many service stations currently do not have gauges . and those that do are generally wrong you should invest promptly in your own tire gauge. It will sure pay dividends.

Because and since modern tires give us so little trouble we often, if not usually, forget about them until they are damaged. A good practice is to check tire pressures every week or two and of course prior to any long highway or road trip. As well tire care professionals note its often forgotten , and they staunchly recommend an inspection process if you are driving from a hot climate , say Florida to a much colder climate say northern Alberta or vice versa. Properly inflated tires at one temperature could suddenly become over inflated or alternately under inflated as temperatures changes. The principle of tire rotation is that tires be changed periodically from position to position on the auto - be it car or truck - to level out any unevenness that may develop due to driving conditions and load factors. In most cases rotation has the benefit of extending tire life span because tread wear is more even during the life of all four tires. Cars used to have a full set new of 5 full size tyres , but now for space saving your trunk will contain the "donut" spare.

A good investment is an accurate tire gauge. It is extremely rare when a wheel comes off the production line at a major tire manufacturer such as Goodyear or Michelin , with the tires in perfect balance. The rubber in the plies does not go on that smoothly. There are places where the plies butt together to form a spot that is slightly heavier. Other factors that contribute to shortening the lifespan of tires are impacts against curbs and potholes, and high speed driving. Be wary of construction zones during spring , summer and fall.
Hazards may be unmarked . Even if the construction company agrees to pay for damage done - who needs the hassle , extra effort and all the energy wasted to correct the problem and make the insurance claim. A major role of fire departments is fire prevention not fighting fires.

Some motorists think and will trust the gauge at their local garage 100 %. However it is a safe bet not to wholly rely on the accuracy of a gauge that may be mounted on the hose at a service station. Such gauges are often mistreated - either run or dropped - When your wheels are misaligned , the tires are "bucking the system". In effect you are trying to make your car go in one direction while the tires are pulling you in yet another very distinct direction. Therefore , in the process of forcing them back on track , you are scrubbing rubber off the tread itself. It is no wonder why these instruments are often wholly and fully inaccurate and as such are no substitute or a test measurement by your own, well cared for and accurate air tier pressure gauge.

No doubt about it. There are two schools of thought concerning and regarding tire rotation and the practice of a schedule of rotating your vehicle's tires and rims. One says to rotate tires periodically . The other says no need to bother that is unless the wear patterns indicate a need. However both agree that cars with front wheel drive should not have their tires rotated. If the front wheel drive car is equipped with radial tires , you can generally get up to 100,000 miles of service from the rear tires alone. At the end of the day or end of the road , there is but only one individual who can correct poor driving habits and that person is staring back at you each morning in the mirror. Tire and tire tread life can be increased - sometimes more than significantly by avoiding jack rabbit starts , panic-like stops, and hard fast cornering that scrubs off tread from tires and their road contact surfaces. No rice rocket driving for you anymore.
