Italian Serie A – Inter Gets Closer To the Scudetto after Win over Lazio - By: A. White

The current leader of the Italian Serie A and 16-time champions of the league, Inter Milan, got closer to win the Scudetto this campaign after beating the Lazio 2-0 this past Saturday. The Nerazzurri had their first victory after not winning in the last three matches, which gave the second place AC Milan a chance to cut the gap of 14 points to just 7 points. However, this triumph against Lazio, gives Inter a reason to take their tension down and just focus on winning the next game to close the championship. With that win Inter was 10 points ahead of AC Milan, however the Rossoneri beat Catania 2-0 this Sunday and cut back the lead to 7 points whereas third place Juventus is now 11 points away due to their draw against Lecce.

During the first half of the game, Inter started well having couple of options in the early minutes. But even with these opportunities, Inter struggled to control the pace of the game during this first part, giving Lazio a chance to take advantage. Although none of the teams got good opportunities to open the score.

Even Inter’s midfielder, Esteban Cambiasso, admitted that his team had a very poor start in the game but according to him, manager Jose Mourinho had a long talk with the team in the dressing room that make them to return with more determination and confidence. That dictated later the two goals of Inter and their control over the game in the second half.

The first goal came with a good play of the Sweden Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who took a shot from the edge of the area, after surpassing David Rozenhal and beating the goalkeeper Fernando Muslera with a wonderful kick towards the net. After opening the score, Inter looked more confidence and played a much better soccer, whereas Lazio seemed tired. Although a good option of goal of the Eagles came by Tommaso Rocchi, who missed the shot.

Later at minute 70, Inter added a second goal with a great play of Ibrahimovic, who did a great pass into the area and assisted his teammate Sulley Muntari, who kicked the ball sending it to bottom of net, putting the score 2-0 in favour of the Inter.

During the final part of the match, the Nerazzurri were handling easily the game and it did not seem as they were eager for a third goal. However, at minute 85th Ibrahimovic was booked with a yellow card after having an altercation with Francesco Matuzalem, and this means we will be miss the next game.

At the end of the game, Cambiasso said that this was a great win despite of not playing the 90 minutes at their best and now they only need 6 points to win the title.

“Luckily, we obtained three deserved points. If before we needed nine points for the Scudetto, now there are only six points left, therefore if we win in Verona it is possible that we celebrate at home against Siena."
