It Isn't Really HEARTburn, it Should be Called ESOPHAGUSburn - By: Richard Pagano

A basic knowledge of what causes acid reflux is very important to devising a plan to deal with this painful and, in some cases, dangerous affliction. Sufferers of acid reflux know that the symptoms, mostly chest pain and sore throat, can trigger discomfort for hours or even days at a time. Hydrochloric acid used by the stomach in the digestive process is the source of irritation when the contents of the stomach leak back up into the esophagus. It is common knowledge that nearly all of the causes of acid reflux are often activated by lifestyle and diet. The everyday choices we make will have a tremendous impact on our health.

Stomach acids back up into the bottom of the esophagus when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not operate as it is supposed to. The condition of the LES is perhaps the single most important factor that causes reflux. The upper gastrointestinal tract relies heavily on the proper flow of foods, liquids, and even mucus. The middle point between the esophagus and the top of the stomach is the LES, which is really a sort of valve made up of muscular tissue. The muscle that makes up the LES is active most of the time, contracting and closing off passage into the stomach. This closing of the passage prevents reflux. During eating the LES muscle relaxes temporarily. As soon as the food makes its way into the stomach, the LES goes back into regulator mode and constricts. When properly functioning, the LES will maintain a tight seal most of the time to not allow backwash. A weak LES is often the most likely cause for regular acid reflux sufferers. Severe cases of this condition may indicate that a person is suffering from gastro-esophageal reflux disease--also known as GERD.

Acid reflux culprits include, but are not limited to, tomato-based sauces, fried and fatty foods, chocolate, alcohol, peppers, and hot and cold caffeinated beverages. Eating these foods is akin to adding fuel to the fire. Smoking makes a bad situation worse by introducing harmful chemicals into a weakened esophagus. Other possible sources include alcohol, acid-containing soft drinks, certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, and overeating because the stomach cannot contain the overproduction of acids. People who struggle with weight problems put themselves at further risk for experiencing acid reflux and/or GERD. This is because the extra weight puts more pressure on the stomach and esophagus.

Many of the factors that play a significant role in causing acid reflux are pretty simple to manage. In fact, in many instances of persistent acid reflux, lifestyle changes can prevent heartburn from becoming a lifelong burden. Remember to consult your doctor before embarking on any treatment strategy.
