Istanbul City Breaks - By: Asifkhan

Everyone likes to relax a little on holiday. Some people like to spend the whole holiday relaxing, some prefer to be climbing steep mountainsides or diving into the ocean depths. But either way, everyone needs to take a break, take a breath and relax a little. This is especially true in bustling cities, where the tempo of life can be overwhelming, even to the most ardent lover of cities. We look at one of the world's busiest and most vibrant cities - Istanbul - and examine the top five ways that you can take time out from your Istanbul city break to relax a little.

A trip round the markets and bazaars is pretty much a given for any holiday to Turkey for Istanbul city breaks , and where better to try your hand at bartering than at one of the largest covered markets in the entire world? Istanbul's Grand Bazaar has such a claim to fame and the sight itself is every bit as impressive as that implies - with over 58 streets and 6,000 stalls, it attracts between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors on a daily basis. Although you can get a huge variety of goods and souvenirs from it, it is especially known for its jewellery, leathers, pottery, spices and carpets.

Istanbul is unlike any other city in Europe - or Asia for that matter. It combines influences from two cultures, juxtaposing east and west, Christianity and Islam. But although it straddles two continents, the city doesn't feel as disjointed as you might expect. After a few days here, it somehow seems to work together, adding up to a unique experience.

Where nightlife and drinking are concerned, Istanbul has recently undergone something of a revolution. I had been expecting quite a conservative scene in keeping with their Islamic values but the city has all the contemporary hallmarks of its European neighbors.

With numerous McDonalds and even a brand-new Harvey Nichols (at the Kanyon Centre, Buyukdere Caddesi 185), Istanbul has a thriving - and continuously growing - collection of clubs and bars to match.
