Isn't It A Waste Of Time And Money To Insulate My Garage? - By: Frank Froggatt

I imagine that not a lot of thought is put into garage insulation by you. Most of the people who own their own home are well aware of the energy saving benefits of having their walls and attics insulated so they make sure that it is done. But, since garages are unconditioned spaces, not heated or cooled, it does not makes sense to insulate them.

Or does it? Not having your garage insulated will allow it to maintain the temperature of the outside air be it extremely hot or extremely cold. This may not be a problem in the garage, but, with uninsulated walls and a ceiling shared between the garage and your home, it can become a costly source of energy loss. Plus, any detrimental fumes your chemicals that might be in your garage, via your car exhaust or fertilizers, or paints or whatever, can enter your home through the wall if there is no insulation barrier.

The absolute best way in which to keep these detrimental things inside of your garage from coming in your home is to make sure that the walls and ceiling that separates the two is insulated. You have a number of different choices for the types of insulation that you can use in your garage walls, and making the right choice can make a large difference.

As Batt insulation has been a popular choice for many years, whenever a homeowner thinks about insulating their walls or their attic this is pretty much what they think of. Although you might notice that batt insulation has some of the same R-value's as many other types of insulating material, when insulating your garage it usually isn't the best choice.

Batt insulation is purchased in rolls, and is installed by rolling it between the studs. Batt insulation is infamous for not sealing the spaces between the walls, and it can leave a gap between the two which isn't optimal. Energy is allowed to escape through these gaps and fumes are also allowed to enter. Batt insulation is highly susceptible to any type of moisture, which will further reduce any insulating that it was doing.

Foam-board insulation, solid sheets of molded polystyrene, offers similar R-values as batt insulation, but is less bulky. Foamboard insulation is pretty much the same as Batt insulation though in the fact that it won't fill the gaps in your wall.

In order to cut down on any of the energy loss and seeping in of fumes, you're going to want to find an insulation type that will fill every gap and covers the walls and ceiling of your garage with a nice tight seal. When you spray on foam insulation it spreads out and fills in all of the gaps thereby making it completely sealed. One of the other benefits of using spray foam besides the fact that it has very good R-Value is the fact that it is resistant to moisture.
