Is plastic the perfect material? - By: Charlie Board

If you were to design a material from scratch to be used widely in building applications you would most likely begin with a list of desirable properties. Amongst such a list of properties would typically be strength, durability, weather resistance and when considering how it was to be placed in situ you may consider aspects such as the ability to free form the material into bespoke shapes and the weight characteristics you desire. Some applications may require heavy weights whilst in many cases lighter materials would be far easier to handle and build with.

When considering this list of desirable properties, it can be seen that a number of these can already be fulfilled by one of the most widely used materials in modern construction: plastic. Plastic may not be the most prevalent of materials in terms of quantity. Both bricks and sheet metals provide so much surface area to our modern buildings that plastic cannot yet challenge this volume of usage but, for sheer variety of applications, plastic wins hands down.

Plastic is used in a broader range of applications than any other material. In all of these uses, it offers the benefits of being lightweight, durable, easy to fit and always cost effective. Some examples of these applications are, plastic guttering, plastic fascias, wall cladding and plastic plumbing to mention just a few.

If you decide to abandon your quest for a new material in favour of the existing plastic, the challenge you may face for your building project is to identify a source for this broad range of products. At Bliby Plastics, we distribute a broad range of these plastic products such as plastic guttering, plastic fascias and wall cladding.
