Is Video Conferencing Available Over Public Internet? - By: Jamie Simpson

A technology which promotes telecommunication, video conferencing is often misconstrued as a technology that is limited to private internet connections. While past video conferencing systems may have limited the usage of a video conferencing system by requiring special equipment to transfer the picture and sound over. New developments within the internet, telecommunication and computer industries have sparked new uses for video conferencing and now enable just about anyone with an internet connection to benefit from video conferencing.

What is Video Conferencing?

By compressing both audio and video simultaneously, video conferencing allows real time communication, both audial and visually. Because of advances in technology (continually getting better and growing as time progresses), video conferencing is emerging as a precious tool for families, business people, students and countless groups of people who find it necessary to connect with others despite being situated a considerable distance away from them. In short, videoconferencing fills the purpose of bringing large groups of people together with video and audio.

Availability and Standards

With increasingly improving standards, video conferencing has experienced technological advancements that allow users to achieve successful results despite the use of a public internet connection. Such changes include the establishment of:

- The International Telecommunications Union - Public Switched Telephone Networks standards.

- Scalable Video Coding: A standard of compression - Simplistic Set-up: Allowing broader use for a variety of conference participants.

Requirements

Successful videoconferencing using a public internet connection is a real possibility and is a viable option for many telecommuting consumers. However, while videoconferencing on a public internet connection is a real possibility, there are several requirements and setbacks that may make its use more difficult or limit users in a small way. During periods of high traffic on a public internet connection, conference users may experience a slight lagging in the picture in contrast with real time. Though packet loss may affect the picture quality, there are tools available to minimise such affects accompanying the use of a public connection. One method of such improvement is Adaptive Motion Control (AMC) which helps assimilate conferencing capabilities coinciding with a constantly changing connection in a public setting. The tools provided by AMC help in the following ways:

- Reduce video Degradation associated with clogged bandwidth.

- Videoconferencing capabilities adapt to the diverse conditions accompanying public connections.

- Overstep even extreme use on public connections, creating a cleaner connection despite excessive, clogged use.

- Provides correction during real time so conference participants do not experience lags.

Equipment and Tools

Although the connection of a video conference is vital to its success, several other components can effectively add to the quality of a session, improving conference productivity with boosted technological advancements in conference equipment. Both a quality camera and monitor are vital to successful sessions in addition to imperative requirements for good audial equipment, both input and output. Systems can vary from more intricate equipment specifically for conferencing, to multifaceted goods used in a desktop setting, on a smaller, simpler scale. Despite the increasingly effective technological advancements that video conferencing has endured, many users may not be aware of transformations that have yielded a more effective and successful tool for communication.

Video conferencing is no longer limited to those with private internet connections, widening the gap and resulting in a more successful and multifaceted method of communication for business people, students and families alike.
