Is Using Water Distillers Much Better As Opposed To Consuming Mineral Water? - By: joalesto

As a junior league coach and a former athlete myself, I know the importance of consuming a lot of minerals, whether it's from the food we eat or the beverage we drink. This was the main reason why I used to always prefer drinking mineralized water over plain tap water. But I've recently been told that drinking distilled water may also be a good, and possibly better, alternative to tap water. Here's what I got when I tried to compare the two.

Mineralized water

Mineral or spring water are water drawn from natural sources such as underground streams and springs, as well as caverns where water naturally picks up salts and minerals like iron and calcium which are beneficial for the body.

Water companies who sell mineral water collect it from its sources and process it in their plants to remove unwanted or hazardous elements such as harmful metals. Because of its nature, it is quite difficult to reproduce mineral water artificially, unlike purified or other types of filtered water. Processed water are then bottled and sold by various distributors.

Distilled water

If you think mineral water is spring water, you can think of distilled water as rain water minus the pollutant elements, of course. Here's how a water distiller works. Just like in the natural water cycle, water is evaporated through a hot coil and the resulting steam is condensed back into liquid form. Once cooled, the distilled water is then good to drink.

During the process of distillation, practically all non-H2O elements are removed. These includes toxins, contaminants and microorganisms which can cause illnesses to people (the E. histolytica is particularly notorious for this). However, distillation also removes beneficial elements, the very elements commonly found in mineral water. So what is really left is just clean, purified water.

Among types of water purifiers, water distillers are one of the best. They're the ones used in laboratory studies which require the purest form of water. It is also cheaper than some other forms of processed water (cheaper even than bottled mineral water) and one of the best suited for drinking and cooking. Distilled water may be bought in bottled form or you can also buy water distillers.

So which is better?

Well, the matter isn't so straightforward. First, I believe I have to stress that both are beneficial and should be preferred over drinking tap water or other unhealthy beverages like sodas and some other artificial drinks. Now, when I compare distilled water and mineralized water, one always has the advantage over the other but that depends on the factor that I choose.

For example, if my priority, as is the priority of the kids I coach, is to get more minerals then the answer is obvious. Athletes really need as much minerals as they can get and the ones that come from the water they drink can go a long way. The problem though is it is not always practical. To put it bluntly, strictly drinking mineralized water is costly.

Drinking distilled water is a cheaper alternative plus it has the advantage of protecting drinkers from waterborne pathogens in the water. In a way, it is better because though regular water may have minerals it may also get you sick and a player is no good if he's sick in a game.

In a time where unhealthy beverages are constantly offered to kids, it has become more essential that they drink good quality water. If the priority is getting more vitamins, then it is better to drink mineralized water and just take foods and vitamins that can combat illnesses. If the priority is keeping away from being sick then it's better to drink distilled water and just drink supplements to make up for any lost minerals.
