Is There A Hereditory Cause To Migraine Headaches - By: Carol Bell

Most migraines (very intense headaches) start when a person is young and sometimes many family members suffer with them. They usually affect one side of the head and sufferers say they can be affected anywhere from four hours to those that last for two days or more if left untreated. An attack is debilitating and sufferers are usually left feeling crippled and exhausted after the head pain has passed.

There doesn't seem to be any regularity to the attacks either as one individual might have a number each month while another sufferer will only have an attack once a year. Some symptoms could easily be associated with other illnesses like influenza for example. What isn't understood is why migraines can start at an age as early as ten but normally stop before someone reaches the age of forty, however, by the time someone reaches fifty, attacks almost never occur.

It is not uncommon for a number of family members to share a migraine headache problem and hereditary links are believed to exist, however, science has not yet proved that there is a genetic factor at work. It is believed that victims have a certain susceptibility in their brains that allows the blood vessels and nerves to become inflamed. There are three women to each man that suffer with this condition, one in every four women will be a victim of it, while only one in twelve men will suffer with it at some point in their life.

Another symptom that is not consistent is those people that know when they are going to have an attack anything up to thirty minutes before it happens, A number of different warning signs have been exhibited as shown below:

Nausea is common first sign followed by disturbances in vision, loss in the sensation of taste and lack of sensation in the person's tongue. Other symptoms exist but these appear to common with most people.

The most common type of this condition is known as migraine without aura, these victims have no warning, but the symptoms can also be intensified if they move to much.

Some medical experts believe it is the contracting blood vessels that are responsible for the migraine with aura effect. Some suggest that it is the rapid expansion after this narrowing that causes the awful headaches, those who are afflicted say the headache is often so intense that it impedes with regular routinely daily activity and may even keep them awake. the most common are listed below:

Weather patterns, certain foods, high altitude, drinks, bright lights, not enough sleep, and stress caused by personal problems

Monitoring and recording the triggers in a diary can help avoid future attacks so it is something that all sufferers must learn to carry out.
