Is The Graphic Video Depicting The Slaying Of An Elephant Decent Or Bad Marketing - By: Michael W. Mears II

Bob Parsons, the CEO of the internet web-hosting company, GoDaddy.com is currently under attack for a sensitive video he posted online from a recent vacation to Zimbabwe last month. On March 8th, Parsons, the founder of the popular web-hosting site, vacationed to the African country to take part in his second annual wild elephant hunt, shooting and murdering a wild bull elephant. He has been traveling to the country for years, and has only recently been asked by the natives to help them in their plan to preserve their crops from the rampaging giants.

Parsons has slain five elephants to date. Natives can be observed chopping up its corpse after the elephant is killed, dispersing the meat in the video. A well-known AC/DC track is playing over the video, and many of the natives are wearing GoDaddy hats.

Blasting Parsons for the bad taste of his actions, the animal rights group, Persons for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has begun a campaign urging individuals to transfer their domains from the company’s servers. They awarded him the first ever ‘Scummiest CEO of the Year’ title and are unhappy with how Parsons is addressing the issue by not showing any remorse and standing by his actions. Though a recent statistic shows that close to 20,000 individuals have transferred their sites away from the web-hosting company, spokeswoman, Elizabeth Driscoll said, “There has been no significant change in business.”

Viral [marketing is a unique thing, and a video can go viral at any point in time. When you have a video of such high profile, the chances of that occurring are much more likely, but one theory is that Parsons intended for the video to go viral after he tweeted a link to it on March 18th, in the hopes that it would bring more attention to the company.

In many cases, PPC internet advertising is the primary method of getting individuals to visit your site, but when a video goes viral, it breaks all of the rules, but even in situations like this, the publicity is not necessarily a negative thing in some ways. PPC search marketing is just one of many methods to get your business known to the masses. People become more inclined to see what it’s all about when someone mentions your product or there is some controversy in connection to your service. Once the dust settles, people will still recognize it, and your company becomes a household name.

The old saying: “there’s no such thing as bad publicity,” in reality, may have substance.
