Is Technology Costing You Sleep? - By: Eva Blakeley

It may not be what you would call news for many of us, but leave it to the researchers to launch yet another study to prove to the public what would seem to be already painfully obvious - that our computers, televisions and cellphones are costing us sleep. Well, duh... I’ve had a pretty good idea that this was the case ever since I began staying up all hours of the night watching obscure music videos on YouTube and posting incessantly on forums or yakking on Skype with people all around the world in different time zones, only to find myself oversleeping or waking up bleary-eyed with a feeling not unlike a hangover (well, okay, maybe they were partly real hangovers).

The latest study which has spent who knows how much time and money figuring out what just about anyone alive today could have already told you was launched by the US National Sleep Foundation, which has concluded that if you stay up all night playing video games or using your mobile phone to drunkenly call up old girlfriends, that there is a strong possibility you will not be quite as productive during the day. This shocking realization may be news to some, but probably only to certain tribes in the Amazon or New Guinea. Apparently, 95% of those surveyed have admitted to using some type of electronic device within an hour of going to bed and that ⅔ of Americans report not getting enough sleep at night.

In what has to be one of the understatements of the year so far, the vice-chairman of the NSF, Russell Rosenberg, says, “Unfortunately, cell phones and computers, which make our lives more productive and enjoyable, may be abused to the point that they contribute to getting less sleep at night leaving millions of Americans functioning poorly the next day.” In an era of free streaming content, cheap web hosting, cloud computing, 3D gaming, smartphones, iPads and more, a little sleep deprivation may be necessary. Did I mention cheap web hosting? Oh, yes, I did - sorry, I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night...
