Is OTC Meds The Best Choice For Your Pain? - By: Ethan B Kalvin

Over the counter pain relief remedies that populate the medicine cabinets and night stands of millions of people across a wide social and economic spectrum, come in many varieties and are used for headaches, backaches and many other aches are not all the same by any measure and too often these OTC pain controllers might be causing more problems than you could imagine. While they might seem like the best way to regain some normalcy in your daily routines, it might be best if you explored some different forms of relief.

OTC medications can be somewhat misleading by the colors, sizes and shapes, but the facts are that they pretty much contain the same medication, with the exceptions of Excedrin, Aleve and Aspirin. Here is a little health information fact for you; unless you monitor your intake of these medications every day for the duration, you could become a poster child for weak kidneys or even a much more serious condition called kidney failure. You should always use some common sense and not only monitor the amount being taken but follow the directions on the bottle.

One major problem associated with this type of pain relief is that your body and system can get used to them, thus increasing the routine daily doses, while becoming less and less effective over time until they just don't relieve any pain any more. This could well lead to the perfect health storm. Deciding to go well above and beyond the recommended daily doses of any medications is simply dumb and will create other more serious health problems and conditions for the individual.

Just because these pills are over the counter and you don't need a prescription to purchase them doesn't mean that they aren't potent or that they don't have any long term effects on your body. It is important to make sure that you follow the instructions on the label as well as read the label completely for any potential side effects that could affect you down the road. While these things may seem harmless, taking too many over the counter pain relievers can not only result in kidney failure but in death.

It is not uncommon for over the counter medications to not work as well as expected or desired for a chronic pain conditions and you have to seek relief elsewhere, you should never rule out prescription pain medication based solely on the misuse and horror stories of these drugs. Often they are the relief you need, but only under doctor supervision to keep you safe.
