Is It Time to Upgrade to HD? - By: Art Gib

Many people are wary of buying new electronics because the prices are typically very high when they are first released. Because of this, many homeowners have yet to upgrade to a flat screen high definition television. When HDTV's first came out, they cost several thousands of dollars for even a small screen television. Now that technology has advanced, prices have dropped dramatically. If you're in the market for a new TV or just want to upgrade to a high definition TV; now is the time.

Due to advances in technology, the economic situation and new companies coming in competitively, HDTV prices have dropped to levels that are probably about as low as they are going to get. You can get a 26 inch HDTV for under $400! Even large HDTV's are becoming reasonably priced. Some Black Friday deals had 50 inch Plasma TV's for under $900. If you have a very old TV, now is definitely a good time to buy with the upcoming transition to digital television. If your TV set is too old, you'll no longer receive over the air channels and will be forced to upgrade anyway.

Some people don't want to upgrade their TV's because they think high definition programming costs too much. Many people don't realize that you can get lots of free HD channels over the air. When shopping for a new high def TV, just ask the salesperson if the TV you're considering has the tuner that will allow you to receive free HD channels over the air. This is an important step since all TV's don't have the same tuners. Many of the basic channels are completely free but if you want some of the cable channels or movie channels in HD, then it will cost you additional money each month.

HDTV's can sometimes cost more to operate than traditional TV's. Because of the technology, they consume power that may increase your electricity bill by $50 to $100 or more each year. If you are concerned about this, make sure to find a high definition television that is Energy Star certified. You'll also probably want to look at a LCD TV because they use less power than a Plasma TV.

The truth of the matter is that is time to stop waiting to buy a HDTV. Competition and technology has achieved never before seen levels and prices probably aren't going to get much lower. If you shop the weekly sales or online deals, you can usually save a $100 or more on your TV. Sometimes they even come with free dvd players, surround sound systems, Blu-ray players or extended warranties.

Stop by your local electronics store or visit popular online stores like Amazon and talk to a qualified sales rep. You'll also want to shop smart by reading reviews on the Internet and checking consumer guides and reports either online or in magazines. It's time to buy a HDTV and really improve your home's TV watching experience. Go find a good deal on a new HDTV.
