Is Harder Better? - By: Kim Malchuk

I am not talking about what YOU think I am referring to. This is not about YOUR mattress. I am talking about how we handle the curve balls in life. Let’s face it. Life is full of surprises and some of those surprises are not the greatest. At times we feel like we are about to go under into a pit of quicksand.

What we have all seen in the movies about these pits is a myth. Research shows that it is impossible for a person to submerge in this stuff. That’s because our bodies are less dense than quicksand. If you know that you might be in dangerous territory – remember Teddy Roosevelt’s mantra: ‘Walk softly and carry a big stick.’ Walking softly is sensible, but it’s the big stick that could save you.

When you fall into quicksand you must resist the natural instinct to kick and flail yourself out of this pit. You are only making the situation worse because you are separating the sand from the water. Instead, you need to stay very calm, lean back and get as much of your body to the surface as you possibly can. When you take this easy approach you will begin to float. Slowly start moving your feet in small circles to get yourself closer to solid ground. Take that stick in your hands and use it to help guide you to safety.

So there you have it. One myth is broken and now for the next one. I think that we all make things harder on ourselves than they have to be. Just because it’s harder does not necessarily mean that it’s better. What about just being easy and gentle on ourselves? Could that be another alternative to helping us get back on solid ground? Perhaps it is time to stop trashing and fighting to get out of troubled times. Maybe we all just need to lie back and rise above the issues in life that will try to pull us down every once in a while.
