Is Colon Cleaning A Rip-Off? - By: Anthony Dwiers

Amidst the various colonic diseases discovered by experts as years pass by, several practices and health products are popping out including colonic cleansing and products associated with it, claiming to cure or prevent diseases. Often times, different publications and advertisements exaggerate the health benefits that colon cleansing can provide and majority deviates from factual evidence and information. Consequently, colon cleansing becomes a trend in the health industry these days but the manner of information giving out has been misleading to the public. Indeed, colon cleansing provides health advantages; however, let this article clear the haze what is real and what is a mere myth about it.

Colon cleansing is the removal of feces and intestinal contents through flushing the colon or orally with the use of colon cleanse supplements. Colon hydrotherapy is also known as colonic irrigation, where water is inserted through the rectum to irrigate the large intestine. This is done primarily as a preparation for diagnostic examinations, surgeries and even constipation. Oral colon cleansing, on the other hand, consists of consumption of dietary fiber, Oral laxatives, herbs and / or dietary supplements taken by mouth to encourage a large amount of bowel movements.

In order to sort out this public misunderstanding, here are some facts and common myths about colon cleansing and how the colon works:

Colon Cleansing Myths

1. The colon requires periodic cleaning like a sewage system.

2. Waste accumulates in the colon and causes deposition of toxins as well as formation of plaques.

3. Every person must have bowel movement everyday to eliminate wastes formed from the daily meals eaten.

4. Colon cleansing is an efficient weight loss method.

Facts

1. The colon has a natural ability cleanse itself by evacuating stool from the body, leading it through series of peristaltic movements in the direction of the colon, where the waste is finally eliminated from the body. Thus, there is no need for daily irrigation of the colon or laxatives to get rid of waste, as the intestine alone with cleaning system. No less important are the good bacteria filling the colon through which consume undigested fiber, which helps to keep the intestines healthy. Continuous irrigation of the colon can result in an imbalance in electrolytes, as well as damage the beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy colon.

2. There is no accumulation of plaques and toxins in the bowel without intestinal cleansing. These are merely the claims of companies that make colon cleansing products which in reality are the components of herbal colon cleanser, undigested fibrous substances and herbs such as Senna and other ingredients, which give the illusion of elimination of plaque upon a bowel movement. Scientific and medical studies do not support the theory of colon plaques, and the subsequent harm caused by them..

3. The bowel movement frequency varies from every individual. Some may defecate once or twice daily while others have bowel movement every other day and even just thrice a week. The frequency of bowel movement is also affected by the amount and type of food eaten by a person. The more food intake a person has, the more food needs to be digested and the more waste are produced. Therefore, people who usually eat a lot would most likely have frequent bowel movement than those who eat a little during meals. A condition called constipation can be recognized not merely with the lesser frequency one defecates but it is also accompanied by painful defecation, hard stool and difficulty passing the stool out. Hence, laxative and other colon cleansers are not always necessary when someone has not defecated in a day.

4. Colon cleansing is not designed for weight loss program. Its purpose is more on establishing a regular pattern of bowel movement. Other functions of colon cleansing are mentioned earlier such as part of preparation for diagnostic exams, surgical procedures and constipated conditions.

Generally, colon cleansing should serve it's intended use. There must be factual notice given to the public in order to avoid misuse of colon cleansing products and abuse of process. However, the recommended sound practice is to consult a doctor about any medical products and procedures for proper medical supervision.
