Is Chemical Tattoo Removal Safe? - By: Jackson Taylor

Chemical tattoo removal has been used for hundreds of years to get rid of unwanted tattoos. Regret is an unfortunately a possible side effect of the decision to get a tattoo. While no method can completely remove a tattoo, chemical tattoo removal has a number of benefits.

The most common chemical tattoo removal method is the TCA, Trichloroacetic acid, peel. This medium strength peel is able to penetrate the skin and create a chemical reaction below the skin's surface. The TCA peel will reach through the skin to remove dead cells and allow new ones to be regenerated. As the new skin layers form, the old ones containing tattoo ink are broken down and ink pieces are removed or reabsorbed into the body and treated as waste.

TCA chemical peels are ideal for tattoo removal because they are very safe. There is almost no risk of scarring, which cannot be said for laser tattoo removal. TCA peels at 100 percent strength are able to remove tattoos with one or two applications. The exact timeline for a tattoo to be removed depends on the size of the tattoo, where it is placed and how the tattoo was applied.

Following the directions given on the TCA chemical peel is vital. These steps will help reduce chances of scarring and ensure the process includes as little pain as possible. When it arrives, the chemical peel will look like water; it will not have a creamy consistency. Clients should use a cotton swab or a cotton ball to apply the watery substance to the tattooed skin. It is important to make sure the chemical peel is only applied to the tattoo; this is a very strong form of TCA peels and can cause irritation on areas not covered with tattoo ink.

After the chemical peel is left on the skin for the appropriate time, it can be rinsed off with cool water. If you are trying to remove a small tattoo, you can simply rinse the area, for larger tattoos, you may want to take a cool shower.

During the next week or two, the area covering the tattoo will become inflamed and peel away. As the skin peels away, you will notice the tattoo ink coming off as well. As the new skin is regenerated and comes to the surface, you will see the tattoo fade. Be sure to keep the area clean and moisturized during this entire process. If you believe you will come in contact with dusty environments or spend extended periods of time in the sun, it will probably be best to cover the area. Exposure to the sun can cause permanent scarring similar to the kind that occurs with laser removal. The liquid should be applied in thin layers until the tattoo fades.

TCA chemical peels are one of the best, safest ways to get rid of unwanted tattoos. The tattoo can be removed at home, without any prolonged trips to a dermatologist's office or the high cost of laser removal. Even more important, chemical peels are much less painful than laser treatments. If you are tired of looking at a tattoo that ended up being a mistake, consider using chemical peels to get rid of it!
