Introducing Chile - By: John Atkinson

Chile is a wonderful destination in South America, and is truly definitive of the extremities of this continent’s wild landscapes. It’s a long way from the kind of terrain you might expect to see when you volunteer in Guatemala or one of the other Central American nations, for example.

The majestic terrain of Chile ranges from glaciers to deserts… in fact, the wilderness that surrounds San Pedro de Atacama is ranked as the driest desert anywhere in the world! In between these two extremes, you’ll find lakes, rivers, geysers and even volcanoes, making Chile a truly fascinating destination for anybody with an interest in nature.

Then of course, there are the famous Chilean beaches. Many travelers come here purely for the coastal resorts, and if that’s your plan you certainly won’t be disappointed. Stretching over half the length of South America, Chile boasts an incredible range of white-sand beaches, offering some superb opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and even water sports.

There are also a number of fascinating and beautiful offshore islands that you’ll be able to visit during a trip to Chile. Rapa Nui for example is a popular choice – or ‘Easter Island’ as it is known elsewhere. Then there’s Isla Robinson Crusoe, a beautiful island wilderness which is rich in flora and fauna.

There are also some great opportunities for volunteering in Chile, for those who want to work as they explore. The country suffers from problems such as poverty, disease, and even the risk of volcanoes – so you won’t have any difficulty finding volunteer programs that are desperately in need of enthusiastic helpers! You’ll find the experience both educational and rewarding, and Chile is a refreshingly novel choice, compared to the number of people who choose to volunteer in Costa Rica, and other more affluent American nations.

However you spend your time in Chile, one thing is certain. You will be overwhelmed by the blend of traditional culture and magnificent landscape, and it is likely to be an experience which stays with you for a very long time.
