Comcast the largest cable TV company has revealed that it continues to see the economy slowing down which is affecting its business. Advertising and pay per view services are the main areas hit, and more customers are struggling to pay the monthly cable bill.
Dave Watson, executive vice president of operations has revealed that the cable TV giant are taking steps to relieve its customers suffering by offering a range of lower priced subscriptions.
He commented:- “We are getting a lot of telephone calls right now saying ‘This is a tough time, what can you do?’ ” he said. “These new economy packages will serve us well under these conditions.”
Comcast have introduced an economy package at below $30 a month giving access to 50 TV and Music channels and a lower priced Internet plan at DSL speeds.
Comcast has also been increasing its monitoring service, catching coming problems before it reaches its customers. He also revealed that its customer satisfaction ratings are rising, this is of course based on its own internal measurements so its hardly a surprise.
From 2009, Comcast’s technicians will also track customer appointments during the day using handheld devices. The company also is working on a feature that lets customers go online to find a technician’s whereabouts, avoiding a phone call into Comcast.
Also coming next year is the initial phase of its wireless service, which will most likely be high speed mobile Internet access instead of a cell phone.
“It’s important to protect your high speed data customers with a high speed data alternative. That’s why we’re in this deal,” Watson said.
Comcast are also planning to expand its TiVo service next year to more areas.
Of course you can cancel that horrendous monthly subscription and watch it all online.

You may have noticed something with Internet TV recently, it has become worth watching!
For so long, internet TV consisted of boring channels on boring websites and lots of P2P gibberish. Streaming this and streaming that and instant access to all sorts of junk. The reality was that none of it really mattered. And why? Because frankly none of it was worth watching.
Joost as an example, underneath all the overhyped fluff it consisted of absolutely nothing. Look through its listings and you’ll notice something glaringly obvious. Nothing is worth wasting your time to view.
However this year things have changed. The BBC’s iPlayer and Hulu as examples plus other major catch up TV networks around the world have engrained the concept of Internet TV into the public consciousness.
Pretty much every major broadcaster and TV channel now has a catch-up TV system, whether it is a straightforward streaming concept such as the BBC’s or a player download option like ABC’s. Then of course, you have the slightly dubious BitTorrent sites and movie streams websites that feature collections of movies and TV show links to video streaming portals such as Tudeo and Megavideo for those of you that absolutely have to see the latest movie or show right now!
And the exciting thing for non US residents is that the networks are developing something of a reasoning mind. Giving world wide distribution of shows and movies at the same time, we are however some distance from that right now but getting there.
As an example, top shows such as Lost, Heroes and Terminator are broadcast in the UK within a week or two of its US broadcast, rather than months or years later as was the norm.
The concept of TV on Demand is massive once you have tasted it. Watching your favorite show when you want rather than running to be in front of your TV at a certain time on a certain day, is life changing.
These changes have all been pushed forward thanks to Internet TV, be sure that without it we would all be having to wait until a TV exec decided we could have something. But now its all there waiting for us and if the networks dont supply it quick enough then we will find it and watch it ourselves, illegally if we have to.
So power to the people and power to Internet TV
