Internet TV is growing in popularity, with streaming movies becoming an easy, convenient and affordable entertainment solution.

With the daily growth of internet tv shows and straight to your pc movie streams. The fact that you can watch at home, on the bus, waiting in a queue means that our way of watching TV and movies is gradually shifting onto another level.
Although the economy is collapsing, we have already heard that Netflix is expanding like there is no tomorrow thanks to instant streaming onto hardware devices and PC’s. Other video sites are on the rise such as Hulu, YouTube and other internet tv websites.
Forrester Research spokesman James McQuivey commented:- “What is happening, overall, is people are spending more time with the TV and PC screen because of all these easily accessible video sources. Netflix is one of the many enablers of this new addiction.”
Showing that low cost entertainment is on the rise elsewhere, the box office is also still a popular draw too. Hollywood has grossed over $9.5 billion during 2008, although DVD sales took a drop.
The rise in popularity of internet tv and movies is due to a number of factors – It is an instant solutin, no waiting for a DVD to arrive. Just press go. It could also be an escape from the harsh realities of these uncertain times and the fact that watching internet tv and movies is a very low cost form of entertainment.

DVD by mail giant, Netflix has seen a massive growth in subscribers to its service. And the reason for this credit crunch busting expansion? It’s movie internet streaming popularity.
Netflix has revaled that it added an extra 718,000 subscribers during the fourth quarter of 2008, which exceeded expectations and saw it’s userbase growing to almost 9.5 million. This growth is expected to continue and is predicted to hit 10.6 million subscribers during the first quarter of this year.

A jubilant Netflix spokeman said:- “It’s very clear that streaming is energizing our growth,”
He also attributed the growth to it’s alliance with Netflix enabled hardware players from partners such as LG Electronics, Samsung and Microsoft who are offering Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” service. Using this service, viewers have instant access to around 12000 TV shows and movies to stream.
He continued:- “We plan to spend as much money as we can with the studios, licensing as much content as we can, and we are already one of the studios’ largest Internet revenue sources. Our spending is limited only by what content is available at reasonable costs.”
Although the major part of Netflix’s business is the DVD by mail market, they are putting more and more resources into its online streaming service.
The future is online streaming TV and Netflix know it. That is why they will continue to grow faster than their competition. Because they have already invested so much in online services. The competition are constantly playing catch up.

After years of lawsuit action from Movie and TV companies. Youtube have now shown that by playing video clips, they actually improve sales.
Recently, the eccentric comedy classic team ‘Monty Python’ launched a Youtube channel showing clips of their shows and movies. And after a short time of being on the video website sales of Monty Python DVD’s have increased.
Youtube say on their blog:- “When Monty Python launched their channel in November, not only did their YouTube videos shoot to the top of the most viewed lists, but their DVDs also quickly climbed to No. 2 on Amazon’s Movies & TV bestsellers list, with increased sales of 23,000 percent.”
Of course the Monty Python channel is an official licensed channel and the beef previously with Youtube has been the showing of pirated content. It does go to show that by having free content available, encourages demand and increases sales.
Pop and Rock bands such as Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have shown that people will buy music even if they can get it for nothing. Viewers also buy box sets and DVD’s of shows that are freely available on TV.
However the Movie and TV companies still insist on removal of any unauthorised video content posted on popular video sites in a vain attempt to have complete control over their content. Viacom are also still pursuing a lawsuit with YouTube due to showing of video’s from South Park and other TV shows.
It now makes perfect sense for the stuck up and overbearing studio’s to realise that all publicity is good publicity and work with Youtube rather than against it.
