In a shocking move. Online TV website Hulu has decided that it doesnt want its TV content being streamed on and via other websites.
It has forced both Tv.com and Boxee to remove all Hulu content from its services. Boxees Blog said:-
Two weeks ago Hulu called and told us their content partners were asking them to remove Hulu from Boxee, Boxee said in the post. We tried (many times) to plead the case for keeping Hulu on Boxee, but on Friday of this week, in good faith, we will be removing it. You can see their blog post about the issues they are facing.
Hulu have said that the problem lies with its content partners who are not happy with their streams being shown on other platforms other than via the official Hulu site. The commented:-
Our content providers requested that we turn off access to our content via the Boxee product, Hulu wrote. We are respecting their wishes.
CEO of Boxee Avner Ronen said that he is disappointed and is hoping to convince Hulu executives that Boxee is good for the topstreaming TV and movie website and its partners.
I hope that they will realize the opportunity is greater than the threat,
Hulu has also removed all content from TV.com who were showing big viewing numbers online. TV.com owned by CBS has been affected due to a contractual issue.
On the face of it, it seems a very shortsighted way of doing things that may well backfire on the mighty Hulu. They should take a lesson from the music industry. If people want to see content then they will. It may also be the networks wanting more viewers watching the traditional broadcast.

Revamped Internet TV website TV.com is loved by the viewers, showing a trailblazing 263% rise of unique viewers to it’s website during January.

The revamped TV portal owned by CBS shows a selection of full length TV shows alongside news, forums, blogs and other additional TV related fare. The survey carried out by Nielsen Video Census showed a 1,261% rise in streams viewed and a 4,435% rise in minutes viewed. The website shows aggregated streams from the Hulu website and has recently added CBS TV shows as well as other partners such as Showtime, MGM, Sony, PBS, Endemol networks.
In it’s bid to gain viewers from the mighty Hulu, the site has added additional features to incorporate more social networking features and viewer interaction to differentiate itself.
It seems to be working with stats showing a 19% rise in the monthly viewers in January, a 26% rise in visitors and a 43% increase in duration (minutes) users were on the website.
Spokesman for CBS Interactive Anthony Soohoo said:- “We are seeing more and more people turning to TV.com”
The competition for online TV is getting fiercer by the day with a plethora of quality TV and movie websites such as Hulu, Joost, Sling, Veoh amongst others. Hulu as an example had over 22 million unique viewers during November and they spent on average – two hours watching streams on the website during the month. Enough time for a top TV episode and a movie.
The good news for us viewers is that the internet TV sites will have to keep upping their game as they all want to be top TV dog.
