Interesting Several Styles Behind Masquerade Masks - By: tracynarvaez

There is much history behind the masquerade masks. They surfaced during the Italian Renaissance; they were worn for parties and celebrations. It showed social freedom by allowing everyone of different social statuses to talk with anyone by hiding their identity and not having the consequences that went along with different class socialization.

These celebrations were mainly thrown for the rich and wealthy of the time. They used the masks to disguise themselves because if they wanted to socialize with a lower class person they would not receive the repercussions for such an act. As the wealthy society started to fall so did the use of these.

The police did not like this and many of the wealthy people were against wearing these because they did not like the fact that different social classes were mingling together. Also, people wearing the masks could have affairs or make many financial transactions because no one would know or suspect what was happening and whom it was between.

The main types of these masks include the stick mask, the head, the full face and the half face. Men and women alike wore these designs and also made the theme of what they wanted to resemble or to turn into. There were so many designs to choose from and as the masks got popular so did the quality of the art work put into them.

The half face design was to cover the upper half of the face. It was sometimes smaller and just covered the temples and eyes. It could be tied behind the head. This design was more practical because the user could still manage to eat and talk without removing or adjusting the mask.

The half face design was probably the most practical. The user could eat, drink and talk without having any type of complications. The mask was designed to cover just the upper half of the face, such as the temples and the eyes. A person could be more easily identified but the benefits outweighed the negatives.

The full face design covered the entire face, there were two holes cut for the eyes and occasionally there was a hole cut for the mouth. The ones with mouth holes were more functional. The persons identity was a complete mystery in this design. The only downfalls were it muffled the persons voice and they could not eat or drink while wearing it.

The stick design was informal and was used more for the occasion instead of trying to hide the persons identity. The person wearing this design had to hold the mask up to their face as the mask was on a stick. It could be removed quickly but required a hand to hold it up to the face the whole time.

This fun act of hidden identity was popular long ago and has returned to modern times and is just as popular. Today, these masquerade masks can be purchased at any type of store or online. Most of these are inexpensive and more modern looking. The mask itself stand for mystery and most everyone likes a good mystery.
