Landscape photography techniques allow amateurs and professionals alike to capture the beauty and vastness of nature from singular vantage points. There are many different styles of landscape photography, some of which may include artificial or man-made elements, though most concentrate on natural subjects and the creation of depth and atmosphere. Landscapes can be found just about everywhere, and the term doesn't necessarily have to imply purely natural environments. As well as capturing natural environments, in common with most types of photography, the idea is to record interesting and visually pleasing images which capture the essence of the scene in a way which would be hard to describe with words alone.

Those people who adhere to the traditional ideas of landscape photography strive to record nature in all its beauty with few or any signs of human intervention. Despite this, photographs meeting this definition can be perfectly composed and rich in detail, provided attention has also been placed on the weather conditions, lighting and timing. The depth of the captured scene can be greatly enhanced by foreground detail, such as plants or trees, and natural framing using waterfalls, rivers of other natural elements.

Also, you may be more inspired by moving away from trying to capture the scene in all its realism, and instead taking a more impressionistic approach to the shot. Paying attention to the weather conditions and the interplay of light and shadow will allow you to take pictures which can capture fleeting moments which may only last a few minutes, never to be seen in exactly the same way again. Using impressionistic techniques, you can convey an idea or impression of a scene or something which may have existed for an instant, rather than a straightforward image of the environment.

Abstract photos can be hard to recognize as natural landscapes when taken out of context, even though they are an accurate rendition of the scene at that particular moment. With this genuinely graphic style design technique takes center stage, and natural elements may be manipulated to create a specific compositional effect. Abstract shapes and natural outlines can be combined to produce photographs which can be interpreted in many different ways. Focusing on detailed natural features and combining this with different exposure techniques can open up many different possibilities for interesting images.

Truely exciting landscape photography can capture not only the beauty of the environment, but also provoke thought and create emotion in the viewer. Photographing magestic mountains or forest scenes, lakes, rivers or even the minutest detail in a natural element from an interesting perspective can all be equally satisfying. There are many on-camera and post-processing techniques which you can also use to add an extra dimension to your images.
