Interesting History of Fabrics and Different Fibers. - By: Jessica Thomson

A fabric is made up of a network of natural or artificial fibers which are often referred to as thread or yarn. They are quiet flexible and hence can be run into different textiles and fabrics. Different fabrics are produced by knitting, weaving, knotting and by pressing the fibers together to make felt fabric. Many years back fabric was made out of natural fibers like plant fibers and animal fibers which are cotton and wool respectively. Later came up the manmade fiber industry which would produce first different kind of fabrics like rayon, polyester etc. With the increasing garment industry newer and newer fabrics and the new improved varieties of the older ones came up in the market.
Felt fabrics are a group of fabrics that unlike other fabrics are not woven. They are produced by matting and pressing up of wool or synthetic fibers.
Fibers are basically classified as natural fibers and artificial fibers. Some of the natural fibers are flax which is considered as one of the oldest natural fiber. Cotton has been used since thousands and thousands of years. Cotton is considered as one of the best fabrics to be used in hot and humid climate. India is one of the leading producers of cotton. Wool comes in large varieties from different breeds of sheep which produce different types of wool. And the last natural fiber is the silk. Silk is obtained from the cocoon of the silkworm.
Manmade fibers are very much different from the natural fibers. With the increasing use of fabrics newer fibers were found out to increase the comfort level, for much softer and cozy feel, to provide warmth and to produce more bright re longer lasting colors. All man made fibers differ from on another in their composition and physical properties and hence they have been given different names. Manmade fibers are produced by making use of different chemicals in combination with some natural fibers. There are different manmade fibers like the rayon which is the first ever manmade fiber, nylon, polystyrene, satin, acrylic, spandex and many more.
