Intel have revealed that they think the future of our television set integrating with the web is vital to their future success. The annual Intel Developer Forum which happened this week and also the unveiling of its system on a chip Atom processor which is designed solely for internet enabled TV sets.
Intel have previously released plans for a Widget Channel earlier this year. Designed as a software framework optimized for TV and related consumer electronics devices using Intel CE media processors. The idea of Widget Channels are to allow consumers to enjoy rich Internet applications designed for the TV whilst viewing TV shows and movies.
Eric Kim, the senior vice president and general manager of Intel digital home group said:- “Traditional broadcast networks are quickly shifting from a linear model to a multi-stream, Internet optimized model to offer consumers digital entertainment that complements the TV such as social networking, 3D gaming and streaming video. At the center of the TV evolution is the CE4100 media processor, a new architecture that meets the critical requirements for connected CE devices.”

Intel and other companies are getting excited by the fusion of internet and tv because video will account for around 90% of all internet traffic by the year 2013 and broadcast revenue is still 50 times that of Web video. Intel and its partners hope that the CE range of media processors will enable interactive Internet enabled TV sets that will revolutionize the television experience.
Intel CE media processors provide a full-featured software framework called Widget Channel for the development of Internet applications, or TV widgets. Broadcast networks such as CBS are expanding the gallery of TV widgets to help their viewers find and connect to premium content in a more personalized manner.
“Intel’s CE technology and our new TV Widget platform are designed to help people find the shows they want and discover new programs that are relevant to their interests. What’s more, the TV Widget gives us another platform to connect and interact with our audience while delivering an exciting new television experience,” said George Schweitzer, president of CBS Marketing.
Ther are some big names working with Intel to promote the internet TV Widget Channel and the sheer size and marketing power they bring ensure it will be a success.

Yet another attack on free internet tv by a greedy tv exec. Quincy Smith of CBS in a leaked email has stuck the knife into free tv website Hulu – In the email he says :- “We should think about how hard it would be to prove that some ratings declines are a result of reckless Hulu streams.”
He then proceeded to exude the virtues of the TV Everywhere concept, the Time Warner and Comcasts initiative that CBS has signed up to that will require viewers to ‘authenticate’ that they already subscribe to a cable or satellite service before being able to watch content online for free. Hulu requires no such authentication from its users and they do not like this.
CBS has made it clear that they will not allow its content to be streamed via Hulu, obviously blaming any fall in ratings conveniently on the online tv website. Strangely though CBS streams some of its own shows on its CBS.com and its TV.com websites.
He is also quoted as saying :- “We should also think about if we want to talk the walk on packing more ads and our findings thus far.”
So the fact that Hulu offer great content and for free is getting this particular networks mouthpiece aggitated. And of course all the big networks are starting to round on the internet tv sites and criticise them for not charging.
The leaked email comes just days after another exec said the BBC should charge for its iPlayer service. CBS did confirm the email was indeed sent but declined to comment further. So do not expect to see too much CBS shows online anytime soon, at least not for free and if they do show you can bet they will be full of ads.
