Integration Is Possible with Mavenlive Physical Therapy Software - By: Dr. Jay Winburn

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA - Requests for integration often are made when physical therapists begin to consider adding physical therapy software to their practices.

In this age of computers and technology, nearly every physical therapy clinic these days have existing practice management software in use.

"We know that physical therapists and their staff need ways in which they can streamline processes further and simplify information management," said Mike Gauthier, vice president of product development for Prognition Corp., the makers of Mavenlive rehabilitation exercise software. "When they inquire about Mavenlive, they frequently want to know whether our product will integrate with their existing software, because they don’t want to duplicate their data entry efforts."

Chris Metcalfe, a software engineer and vice president of technical development, recently worked with a chain of physical therapy clinics in Texas to integrate Mavenlive with GE's Centricity software.

"This is our first example of an integration," Gauthier said. “We’ve learned that no real obstacles exist when it comes to integrating with many other scheduling, business and billing software packages."

The clinic requested integration so Mavenlive exercise software would be that much more seamless for this practice's particular application. Mavenlive manages patient treatment information, documents that clinics must generate for doctors, and information kept on patients from visit to visit. However, a great deal of patient demographic information already was entered into the client's existing patient practice management software, and they wanted to avoid having to enter that information a second time into the Mavenlive software. Now, anything entered into the client’s practice management software- mainly the patient's name, referring physician and appointment information- is automatically put into Mavenlive.

The only real challenge Prognition Corp. faced in the integration process was learning to interpret HL-7, a language or protocol that health software products use to talk to one another.

"That was something we hadn't explored before," Metcalfe said. "We had to gain an understanding of the protocol and format of HL-7, but once we knew how these messages were formatted, the integration was relatively straight-forward."

Going forward, this achievement paves the way for the company to integrate for clients much more quickly and easily. And it's a good thing, because the demand for integration is high.

In the long run, integration is beneficial for several reasons. It eliminates the potential for human error, which improves quality control. Overall, it also makes the physical therapist's day a bit easier and enables him or her to spend more time with the patient performing physical therapy assessments and prescribing physiotherapy exercises instead of entering information into the computer.
