Insuring an Eco-Friendly Vehicle - By: Kim Bleeker

Before eco-friendly vehicles came along, there was really only one type of automobile to insure, and that was the gas-guzzling standard vehicle. However, there are now electric and hybrid vehicles that really make a difference in the environment and help in saving the driver money with not having to spend so much money on fuel. In this article, you'll get a look at what it's like to insure an eco-friendly vehicle and how it compares to other vehicles that are not eco-friendly.

Not only are eco-friendly vehicles great buys for those who want to save money, insurance companies often offer discounts to those who want to insure their hybrid/electric vehicles. Research has shown that green drivers tend to be safer on the roads, and typically are more aware of their surroundings and environment when it comes to driving. Even services like OnStar will electronically submit information concerning your mileage to companies like GMAC, and you can receive a discount for having low mileage on your vehicle at the end of a term. When it comes to trying to insure an eco-friendly vehicle, it is definitely recommended to look into the discounts and specials that insurance companies offer to green drivers.

However, hybrid/electric cars can be more expensive to insure rather than a standard vehicle because of their cost. If a green driver were to find themselves in a wreck with someone else, the insurance company would have to fork over more money for repairs than they would with a standard vehicle. Additionally, not only are eco-friendly vehicles more expensive than standard vehicles, they are also in higher demand which can inflate the price of the vehicle by a long shot.

In the future, it would not be surprising if all vehicles transitioned to a more environmentally safe and eco-friendly state. In this case, the vehicles would be cheaper and they wouldn't cost nearly as much to insure. However, because of the current circumstances, they tend to be pricy to insure. It's not a bad idea to remember that discounts are offered for green vehicles by insurance companies, though.
