Inland sailing - By: Tom Jui

Sailing inland waters means there is no need to calculate tide heights and times, or to work out tidal streams and unless it is a very large stretch of water there are no large waves either.

However, wherever you are sailing, basic safety measures should be taken such as wearing a life jacket and checking the seaworthiness of your boat and its equipment before setting off. Wearing sensible sailing clothing comes into this category as well so that you don’t have an accident caused by clothing catching in a winch, or slippery shoe soles causing you to fall overboard.

Here at Scotts of Langholm you will find that we have all the sailing clothing you will need for your early season sail, from fleeces to keep you warm to waterproof sailing trousers for sitting on splashed or dew wet decks. From our selection of Musto, Henri Lloyd and Gill sailing clothing you can find everything from your sailing shoes to watch cap, and the bags to put it all in as well. Sailing clothing should be comfortable and loose enough to move around the boat easily, without being so baggy that you are in danger of tripping or snagging because of loose sleeves or trouser hems.

Staying dry is important in sailing and modern fabrics are both lightweight and quick drying, so an incautious tack that puts the lee side under water isn’t a disaster to your comfort. However, in case of fully capsize and being totally immersed, having a spare set of clothes safely on land nearby or in a fully waterproof bag, is a very good idea. Sailing is full of unexpected incidents and even the most experienced sailor will be caught out sometimes. With practical and comfortable sailing clothing, you can enjoy your sail on the lake or reservoir.
