Information to Consider When Choosing an Infertility Doctor - By: Kevin Schmiterson

Couples and women often start to get concerned about their ability to conceive a child when continuous efforts to conceive. But before you turn to an infertility doctor, there is something that everyone should keep in mind. Before rushing into something as important as having a child or contemplating the many procedures that can be done to solve infertility, it is important that you and your partner understand when to look for a doctor, what to look for in a qualified doctor and some of the treatments that can be expected. When you understand what you are getting into and what to look for in a qualified physician, then you significantly increase the chances of getting the results you are looking for.

Women and couple should not start being concerned about fertility until it has been 12 months since they started trying to conceive. This means 12 months of attempts to conceive that are not interrupted by taking birth control or anything else that could disrupt conception such a surgery or recovering from a serious illness. If the first 12 months of conception attempts are unsuccessful, then you should consider seeing an infertility doctor. Women who are 35 years of age or older should only wait six months before seeing a doctor. Each woman’s body is different, that is why it is best to try for 12 months before considering fertility treatments.

Doctors and gynecologists may not be qualified to be an infertility doctor. Do not be misled into believing that all doctors have the ability to diagnose and treat infertility. The doctor you choose should be a fertility specialist that has training in the field and a successful track record of treating patients. A gynecologist would be the best person to get a referral from for a qualified fertility expert that can help you achieve conception in a safe and controlled manner.

There are several methods that an infertility doctor will use to try and help a couple conceive a child. One method is the use of various medications done on a very specific schedule. Artificial conception is another method along with a variety of other surgical methods. Each couple should keep in mind that fertility treatments can be a bit unpredictable. It is not uncommon for a couple to suddenly conceive twins or become fertile for a long period of time. Be sure to speak about fertility treatments with your doctor and understand exactly what you are getting into.
