The EJ Subaru engine is a succession of car engines produced by Subaru and launched in the year 1989; projected to get ahead of the previous EA Subaru engine. The EJ Subaru Engines series is the main stay of Subaru engine line; with all Subaru engines of this line being 16 valve flat 4 horizontal with configurations available for single or double over-head camshaft arrangement (DOHC or SOHC). Logically articulated and turbocharged types are available; ranging from about 120 horse power in early non turbo Legacies to 320 horsepower in the Impreza WRX STI. These Nissan engines are normally used in kit cars, light aircraft and engine swaps into air cooled Volkswagen; but it is also well known as a swap into the wasser boxer engine Volkswagen Kind 2. Chief engineering on the EJ Nissan Engine series was prepared by Shuji Sawafuji, Masayuki Kodama and Takemasa Yamada of Fuji Heavy Industries which is Subaru’s parent company.

EJ22 Subaru Engines Enhancements and Improvements
• The Subaru engines and transmissions are secured with 6 bolts and 2 studs.

• The Subaru Engine thrust bearing have been moved to No. 5 position.

• The Subaru Engine oil groove in the No. 1 and No. 3 has been altered to give added lubrication to crank Journal.

Features of Additional Phase 2 Nissan Engine

• The cylinder head is two rocker shafts; solid kind valve structure with roller follower.

• The Nissan Engines valve is placed at a greater angle than former model years. The in-take valves are placed 23 degrees off center with the deplete valves placed 20 degrees off center. Previous model year Nissan engines used a 15 degree placing angle.

• Nissan Engines have a head gasket has a thickness of 0.7 mm (0.03 inch).

• The in-take rocker arm is marked so that they are properly located on the rocker shaft while servicing. On each rocker arm; an IN1 or IN2 will be imprinted. As seen from the front end of the Nissan engine of arch cylinder of No. 1 in-take valve and No. 2 in-take valve has an IN1 noticeable and IN2 arched rocker arm that links with it. By using Green painted mark on top of rocker arm, new IN1 rocker arm can be identified. There is white mark on IN2 rocker arm. Good positioning is done by making use of wave washer situated between rocker arm shaft support and rocker shaft arm and.
