A banner is a piece of cloth such as a flag bearing a logo, slogan, symbol or other similar message. Banner making is a very old traditional craft encompassing many uses.

For example banners can be symbolic in a religious context; used by many faiths in ceremonies and processions. Usually peaceful however can also be symbolic of religious conflict. Banners in recent years have been found to permanently reside inside places of worship updated by resident artists.

Banners of arms or Heraldic banners which display coats of arms. Trade Union Banners, symbolic of strikes, demonstrations and potential civil unrest, also have had iconic symbolism outlining better visions of the future which would be enabled if the Trade Unions demands were met.

In more modern times the prevalent banner is arguably the advertising banner. Found on many roadsides, underground and subway stations, train tracks, inside trains, planes and buses, printed as well as in electronic form in sports grounds to name but a few.

The use of banner advertising is prevalent in many industries and potential business ventures to raise the profile of the company or organisation.

Banners can also be found decorating city or town centres, used by local or national government to raise awareness of the actual place themselves, the police to fight crime or shops or restaurants to highlight their presence as well as numerous other issues. Banners can also be found being flown behind planes or balloons, draped from skyscrapers and stuck on to window screens.

In recent years banners have also been taken into an electronic form and extensively developed by digital artists, predominantly on the

Internet; However can also be found at high profile sports event where advertising space can be sold to a lot more clients through the use of digital and / or rotating banners.
