India is known for its different kinds of clothing that varies depending upon the state, its culture, religion, climate and people. During ancient times, people in India mostly wore clothes that were made of cotton which would be affordable by almost everyone and silk were used by the rich. Some of the traditional Indian Clothing is as follows:
Dhoti – It is men’s traditional apparel which is an unstitched piece of cloth measuring approximately 5 yards long. There are different ways of wearing a dhoti but the most common method is to wrap it around the leg and waist and securing it with a knot at the waist. Dhoti has different names in different regions.
Kurta – It is a long tunic like outfit that is little above, up to or below the knee. It can be worn by both men and women. Kurtas have side opening below the waist for free movement. A short Kurta is known as a Kurti. Kurtas or Kurtis can be paired with normal pants, jeans, salwars and chudidars. It is a comfortable outfit that is suitable for people of all age groups.
Salwar Kameez – It is highly popular in North India especially in Punjab. Due to its comfort factor it is the most preferred outfit of Indian women. The salwar or the shalwar is a loose pyjama – like pants and the kameez is a long tunic. The salwar kameez comes with a dupatta which looks like a veil or a shawl. Another variation of salwar kameez is the chudidar that has tight fitted pants with gatherings at the ankle.
Saree – It is Indian women’s traditional attire which is an average of 6 yards in length. It is suitable for any body types and comes in numerous fabrics, colours and detailing. There a many ways in which a saree can be drapped. Sarees are suitable for any kind of occasion.
