India vs England: Kohli's ton scripts 8-wicket win for hosts - By: baretha ajay

New Delhi: A superb ton by Virat Kohli and an outstanding spell by young pacer Vinay Kumar powered India to yet another terrific win over England in the second ODI at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Monday. Already leading the series with a phenomenal win in the first match, India thrashed England by 8 wickets to leave the visitors in tatters.

After a terrible start, some commendable knocks from the middle-order guided England to 237 after they elected to bat. However, the target proved too small for the hosts who demolished the visitors attack to achieve it with 14 overs to spare.

Kohli scored over run-a-ball and smashed an unbeaten 108 off 98 balls. He was ably supported by Gautam Gambhir who remained not out after scoring 84.

India lost openers Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane quite early in chase of 238. Tim Bresnan who destroyed Indian batting during the England tour claimed both wickets to give his side a good start. After getting Patel caught by Cook in the fourth over, Bresnan soon ended Rahane’s challenge putting his side in jubilation.

But England didn’t get other chance to celebrate on the Kotla ground as local boys Kohli and Gambhir delivered brilliant shows, denying them any further success. Kohli was adjudged man of the match for his outstanding knock.

Earlier, Indian bowlers failed to capitalise on a terrific start as solid contribution from the middle-order guided England to set a fighting 237.

Young pacer Vinay Kumar finished with an impressive 4/30, his best ODI figure, as England were bowled out for 236 in 48 overs.

England lost both openers Alastair Cook and Craig Kieswetter without a run on the board after electing to bat. Pace spearhead Praveen Kumar sent back skipper Alastair Cook in the very first over and Vinay Kumar dismissed Kieswetter in the next.

Jonathan Trott showed solid determination and tried to rescue his side from the disastrous start. However, at the score of 48, Vinay ended his fight by getting him caught behind. Trott scored 34 off 37 deliveries and hit seven boundaries.

Kevin Pietersen and Ravi Bopara then provided their side the much needed support. Both batsmen consolidated the innings well and added 73 runs for before a double strike put England once again on the back foot.

First R Ashwin trapped Bopara leg before wicket and then Umesh Yadav sent back Pietersen to reduce the visitors to 121/5.

Jonny Bairstow and all-rounder Samit Patel, however, fought back to lift their side from tatters. The duo added 86 runs for the sixth wicket and took the score past 200-mark.

Bairstow played a patient innings of 35 off 49 balls with the help three boundaries whereas Patel smacked two sixes and two fours in his 53-ball knock.

Patel failed to reach his half-ton and became the second victim of Yadav at the score of 207.

Four runs later, Ravindra Jadeja got Biarstow caught by Virat Kohli to give Engald the 7th blow.
