India Inc again on A Manpower Staffing Spree for Year 2011 - By: Steven Hick

2010 saw a robust hiring but there was some reluctance as many firms have just come out or they were recovering from the jolts of recession. However, with the fears of recession subsiding and the GDP growth rate of almost 9% in year 2010-2011, have again buoyed the Indian business firms. They have again started the vehement recruitment drive in the year 2011 and in this respect they have already started visiting campuses, carrying out off-campus recruitment drives, hiring the services of HR (Human Resource) firms etc.

The major recruiter for 2011 will again be IT (Information Technology) and ITES (Information Technology Enables Services) sector followed by retail, manufacturing and banking sectors. Post recession, the rise in the income level of Indian populace has resulted in enhanced consumerism in the year 2010, which saw the rise of retail and manufacturing sector. It is more interesting to see the PSUs (Public Sector Units) come with large number of job offers.

The year has also seen a high demand in the banking sector and PSU banks like State Bank of India have also recruited candidates in tens of thousands. So, the engineering graduates and MBA professionals are smiling all their way to a good career opening at a hefty pay package. There has been a rise of almost 12-20% in the salaries for the professionals in the aforementioned sectors. The high demand of suitable and talented manpower has also come with some problems.

A wide range of offer has resulted in the high attrition rate and the Q3 results of India’s IT giant, Infosys suffered a dip and one of the main reasons was cited as the high rate of attrition. Poaching (the practice of offering an employee greater benefits and pay package and inducting in the workforce, by other company) has also grown in past 6 months. However, these might be some lop-sided effects of robust economical growth on the companies but it is always good when you are on the other side of the fence i.e. when you are a candidate.
