In Contests: Losing And Learning - By: Paul Telling

Joining into competitions has added spice to my high school life. As a high school student, it was really hard to add fun into academics. I bet most of you will agree to that. But fortunately, I was able to enjoy it by doing extra-curricular activities like joining contests and competitions held in my school.

I have joined in quiz bees, cheer-dance competitions, and even in singing contests. I was also into sports back then. During my sophomore year, I was in our school’s swimming team and competed against other schools. I can still remember how happy I was when we won as the overall champion. Truly, the experiences that I have had from these competitions are very meaningful.

One unforgettable competition for me was when I joined in a Photojournalism Contest; it was an inter-school competition for young photo enthusiasts. I always have an eye for visual arts so I got excited when I learned about it. I immediately went out, and with my low-grade camera, I started to take still shots around my neighborhood.

Of all the pictures I took for that contest, one particularly stood out. I chose it to be my official entry. It’s an illustration of a woman nursing another woman’s child. I think it is interesting because the picture depicted the true definition of a boundless love – the ability to care for someone, or something ,that is not even your own.

Unfortunately, I did not win the competition. But I was happy. You may think it’s a bit hypocritical but I was really happy. Even though my entry was not chosen, I was glad to know that it made an impact to a lot of people.

Students, teachers, and mothers –they all have said good things about that photo. The message that I was trying to spread through my art was appreciated in that competition. And that’s what made it very memorable.

The competitions I’ve entered in during high school made me take away my focus from books, notes, and lessons for a bit. That’s actually my primary purpose whenever I join any competition. I wanted to have fun; to deviate from my usual stuff and just do whatever I want.

In addition, joining in school contests allowed me to explore things. It made me discover things I never thought I can do. I was able to share my talents to a lot of people, thus, boosting my self-esteem. I gained a lot of friends. And lastly, joining in competitions taught me how to accept defeats.
