Improve Your Game With Basic Ping Pong Drills - By: Brans

In order to progress in a sport repetition is key, practice enough times and eventually you will find yourself gradually becoming more proficient in a particular shot or technique. Ping Pong in particular is a sport that requires hours of practice and repetition in order to consistently produce quality shots. That’s where basic Ping Pong drills are very useful. In this article I will outline a few commonly practiced basic drills for inexperienced players and explain how they can help improve your game.

Basic Forehand and Backhand Counter-hit
This is the first basic drill which many players learn when they first begin playing Ping Pong. It is applied by using your forehand to hit the Ping Pong ball to your opponent’s forehand. In other words you are hitting the ball from the right side of table to your opponent’s right side. This basic drill will help develop your feeling for hitting the ball as well as your ability to place the ball on a specific part of the table.

Remember this drill can also be practiced from the backhand side hitting the ball from the left part of the table. A good and fun way to challenge yourself is to see how many times you and your partner can keep the rally going for. Keep a track of both yours and your partner’s highest score and try to beat that figure the next time you are practicing together.

Cross Court and Down the Line Drill
Now that you have mastered keeping the ball on the table using your forehand and backhand it is time to move onto a drill that requires a little more skill and effort. Basically this drill requires the first player to play cross court (diagonally) and hit the ball down the line (straight) while the second player only has the option to play cross court. The rally begins by playing cross court and once the rally gets going the first player plays down the line, the second player responds by playing cross court. This rally continues until a mistake is made by either player.

Personally, I like this drill and recommend it to beginning players as it not only teaches control but it also adds the element of surprise for the second player as they are unsure when the ball is going to be played down the line. Drills like these are very beneficial as they are very similar to actual game type scenarios which you may come across.
